Food has long been an issue in this city without a major supermarket. Now demand for assistance is rising, affecting a whole new set of people.
guard watching over groceries in Detroit

DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) -- On a side street in an old industrial neighborhood, a delivery man stacks a dolly of goods outside a store. Ten feet away stands another man clad in military fatigues, combat boots and what appears to be a flak jacket. He looks straight out of Baghdad. But this isn't Iraq. It's southeast Detroit, and he's there to guard the groceries.
In this recession-racked town, the lack of food is a serious problem. It's a theme that comes up again and again in conversations in Detroit. There isn't a single major chain supermarket in the city, forcing residents to buy food from corner stores. Often less healthy and more expensive food.

My family is from the Detroit area and what they are saying is true. For a person that lives in the inner city to buy descent food and not have there pockets cleaned out they would have to go to the suburban area to do that. Not everyone has transportation for that. These corner stores are filthy, and disgusting and I feel sorry for the one that have to shop in those types of places. The food on the shelves are covered with dust and the color is all faded, God only knows how long the boxes have sat there. But I think that the reason there are no major chain grocery stores in these areas is because the people there are poor and they may fear that they won't make a profit.

What is wrong with you people? Sure Detroit has a problem, but what I see here goes way beyond that, it is just plain hatred for another race that has nothing to do with a food crisis. And no I'm not black, I'm a middle aged white female from the south. Several on here has spewed stuff from our forefathers in the Declaration, but what happened to equalitiy for all. The main problem is a lack of morals on both sides. As long as our country is overcome with drugs and people raising thier children with the mentality of everything is free for the taking nothing will ever be solved in this country nor will our country achieve the greatness it once had. I love this country and the decline of its morals and the lack of social intolerence is just sad.

if it was left up to you the unintended consequence would be America would end up a country with an aging population, low birth rate, low population growth, and we would become less and less relevant and then bankrupt, we need immigrants to keep coming in order to keep America prosperous. So you see your all screwed up in your thinking, and paranoid?
